How to download e-books to e-readers: Ebook Central

Downloading to desktop and laptop

To download an e-book to your desktop or laptop you will need to have an Adobe ID and downloaded Adobe Digital Editions. You do not have permission to download software using a University desktop computer, so this will need to be done on your personal desktop or laptop.

1. Go to the Library's E-book Collections and select Ebook Central. Click on 'Sign In' located in the top right of the page and enter your BU username and password.

2. Search for the e-book and click on the 'Download' option.

3. You will then be asked what device you are using. Select 'Laptop Desktop' and 'I'm using my own computer'.

4. You will be prompted to download Adobe Digital Editions. This software governs the loan period of the e-book. If you have already downloaded Adobe Digital Editions then skip this step.

4. Click on 'Download Your Book'. Authenticate Adobe Digital Editions by signing in with your Adobe ID. You will now be able to view the e-book.

Transferring a file from Adobe Digital Editions to an e-reader

To transfer an e-book in Adobe Digital Editions to your e-book or e-reader device, do the following:

  • Connect your device via USB to your PC or Mac.
  • Launch Adobe Digital Editions.
  • Your device will appear on the left side panel in Adobe Digital Editions.
  • Drag the e-book that you want to transfer to your device on the left side panel.
  • The e-book is now transferred to your e-reader/e-book device.

Kindle users: With the exception of Kindle Fire (which allows you to download the Bluefire app and read downloaded e-books on it), you cannot transfer a file downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions and read it on your Kindle. This is due to Amazon using its own Digital Rights Management (DRM) system, which is incompatible with the DRM that Adobe Digital Editions uses. In most cases, this means you can only view e-books purchased via Amazon on your Kindle. You can, however, view e-books that have no DRM on your Kindle. Check out the 'Other e-book platforms' tab for more details about which e-book platforms do not use DRM.
