Research Data Management: Eurostat

Research Data Management (RDM) Library guide

Overview

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union (EU), providing access to high quality statistics and data on Europe. Some data are not published due to their sensitivity, such as microdata that can lead to the identification of individuals. Researchers may, however, access annonymised microdata under specific conditions.

BU is recognised as an approved research entity. BU researchers must follow BU's Eurostat Microdata Use Policy when planning, conducting and disseminating research using Eurostat Microdata.

Requesting access

  • The Principal Researcher (named in the research proposal) must complete a copy of the Research Proposal Application Form (BU version) and send it to the Library Lead for Research Data Management (bordar@bournemouth.ac.uk) in Library and Learning Services (LLS).
  • Once informed that LLS checks have been completed, the Principal Researcher must:

Eurostat will email the person who submitted the proposal when the technical review is approved. In most cases, this will be the Principal Researcher. The Principal Researcher must then:

  • Download the Research Project Proposal (RPP) application form and the Individual Confidentiality Declaration (ICD) form.
  • Date and sign the RPP form and add initials to each page.
  • Send the signed RPP application form to the Contact Person for signing (bordar@bournemouth.ac.uk). Once signed, the form will be returned to the Principal Researcher to upload for the application.
  • Date and sign the ICD form.
  • Send a copy of the ICD form to each researcher named in the application (including the Data Manager if one is named in the application). These need to be dated, signed and returned to the Principal Researcher.
  • Send copies of the completed forms to the Library Lead for Research Data Management (bordar@bournemouth.ac.uk)
  • Upload the completed documents to your project account and submit.

Receipt of the data

Eurostat will email the person who submitted the proposal when access to the data is granted. In most cases, this will be the Principal Researcher. The Data Manager (if one is named in the application) or Principal Researcher must:

  • Use devices and storage approved by IT Services as compliant with BU’s Eurostat Microdata Use Policy to download and access the data.
  • Comply with BU’s Eurostat Micro Data Policy at all times to secure confidential data against unauthorised use.

At the end of the research period

Access to the microdata is only valid for the period specified in the research proposal. At the end of that period the Principal Researcher must:

  • Stop using the microdata received from Eurostat.
  • Destroy the received data and any copy of them.
    • This obligation applies to the original data sent by Eurostat and to all derived data, except for the aggregated and/or analysed data as presented in the research results/reports
  • Sign and submit the declaration that the microdata has been destroyed.
  • Send a copy of the signed declaration to the Library Lead for Research Data Management (bordar@bournemouth.ac.uk)
  • Register references to publication(s) that have been produced using the microdata.
  • Deposit any aggregated and/or analysed research data in BORDaR, BU’s open access data repository, as per BU’s Research Data Policy.
