Library highlights - the 2024/25 year in focus: Promoting wellness to aid learning

The wellbeing of library users is of paramount importance to us. Happy and healthy students are much more likely to enjoy their studies and make the most of the learning opportunities on offer at BU. That's why this year we've given out more blankets, laid on more free food and catered events, and run more competitions and events than ever before - all to help foster that vital sense of community and belonging.

Grab-a-blanket campaign

Comfort is really important when you're studying - but it's really hard to get the conditions just right for everybody. This year we grew our trial 'grab-a-blanket' scheme and have so far provided 200 fluffy, cosy blankets to help those who feel the cold. The students love them, so much so that we received almost 50 comments about blankets alone in our feedback campaigns!

Refreshers' Fair 2025

Our mascot Big Red joined the team this year, and has loved getting out and about to meet students and tell them all about our lovely library! Here he is at the 2025 SUBU Refreshers' Fair in February.

'Meet the team' events

We held a number of faculty-specific events so students had the chance to meet their specialist library teams. Here's Julia, Faculty Librarian of the Business and Law School, chatting to some students about our brand new stats database, Statista.

Pride 2025

Members of the library team joined the SUBU annual pride march on Talbot campus in May. A great community event and really helpful in building our links with SUBU.

Exam snacks

As well as providing tasty snacks during both the January and May exam periods, we also arranged a number of special catered events where students could talk to their specialist library faculty teams over a bite to eat.

Goodie bags

This year we refreshed the offering in our goodie bags to ensure we were giving items that would be both useful and that would contribute to students' wellbeing. We included a stress toy, trolley token key ring, notebook and pen, as well as some sweets and vital library information. This was a great tool to use at our events to promote the Academic Skills Hub and point students towards our Instagram channel where they can find out more.

Did you know?

This year we gave out over 1,200 goodie bags to new and returning students - quality items that are of practical use and a great reminder to students that we're here for them.

Also...

We gave away £500 in vouchers to students in competition prizes - money that could be spent on food, books, or treats!

What our students say:

"Library staff are always so helpful and caring. They do really nice things like putting out snacks at exam time which is really appreciated”
