Collaborative Learning

As part of an assessment you may be asked to work with other students on your course. Or, you may just wish to keep in touch with friends. At the moment, with social distancing rules in place, it is difficult to work with others. However there is a range of collaborative online tools which can make working with others easier. Some of these tools are listed on the Collaborative Learning tab in this guide. Please take note of the advice listed in the 'Important Security Considerations' box.


You should only be working collaboratively with other students when the assessment is for a group project. The rules on academic offences still apply, regardless of whether the work is being done on campus or online. You should not collaborate with other students on individual assignments or assessments. Doing so would consititute an academic offence.

Make your revision as active as possible using a variety of techniques; make an online study group with friends, mind map the content, use post-it notes and revision cards to test key concepts. Whilst your exams will probably take a different form to previous years, you can still make effective use of past papers to test your understanding and application of knowledge. Above all, don’t waste time re-writing out your notes or just reading through content; these are passive techniques and are unlikely to help.

You will be experiencing a new type of exam - the Take-Away Exam (sometimes called a Time Constrained Paper). Right now, you should be revising as you would normally for your modules. Make a revision timetable and start going over the content. You won’t have long between having the paper and submitting your answer; the exam will be available for a few hours in most cases but you are strongly advised only to spend the normal exam duration actually working on it. So now is the time to reflect on what you’ve learnt.

While it may take time to adjust to the new and unexpected circumstances, which we all find ourselves in, it is nevertheless important to make the most of the time you have available for revision. Resist the urge to procrastinate and get started as soon as you possibly can. Apply good time management techniques and avoiding procrastination and perfectionism.

Watch out for unintentional plagiarism and academic offences

It’s OK to revise with others (in fact this can be an effective way of testing yours and your friend’s understanding) but once you have been issued with the paper, it’s important that you work on it alone. You will be asked to submit your work through Turnitin, which will match your work with others that have been submitted, as well as information from the internet, books and journals. Make sure it’s all your own work, as you would any other assessment.

Types of assessment - COVID-19

  • Not invigilated but time constrained, sometimes referred to as Time Constraint Paper (TCP).

 Online Test (Open   Book)

  • Allows student to complete the test where and when they want, normally within a set time scale.

 Online Turnitin   (image based/ non-   text)

  • Standard Brightspace Assignment tool submission box with Turnitin enabled but with no restrictions on minimum word count and file type

 Online   Large/Multiple Files


  • Standard Brightspace submission box that supports large or multiple files of up to 3GB each to be submitted in any file format.
  • Submission is made via Brightspace Assignment tool.
  • Feedback is provided using the Brightspace assignment tool which includes the ability to provide feedback as a file.

 Online Video   Submission   (Panopto)


  • Students are able to use the Panopto recording tool to record videos, narrated PowerPoints, walkthroughs or screencasts which can then be submitted via a Panopto assignment folder on Brightspace.
  • Students can also upload video files created using other video recording software.‚Äč

 Online Wiki


  • This assessment provides a shared online space that students can edit allowing them to collate and present information.
  • This can be used to create mini websites.

 Online Blog/Journal

  • Blog and journal assessment can be delivered either using the Brightspace Discussion Board tool.

 Online Portfolio   Mahara

  • Mahara allows individual students to collect artefacts to evidence their learning and then present them online.
  • Students can then use portfolio for assessment.

 Online Portfolio   OPAL

  • OPAL stands for Online Practice Assessment for Learning tool.
  • This is an external tool only used by the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences.

 Online Peer   Assessment


  • uGrade is used for group work and allows students to score their group members contribution based on criteria provided by the academic.
  • Group scores are then weighted against a group assignment score to provide an overall score.
