Newspapers: Current publications

Current newspapers and magazines

Nexis Uni is our main full-text newspaper and magazine database (non-facsimile) with coverage of local, regional, national and international titles. It also includes journals, broadcasts, newswires, blogs, legal sources, and business/company information.

Use Nexis Uni for...

  • Finding news content for specific issues
  • Find how companies, individuals, products or locations are being reported in news media
  • Compare coverage across different titles, by location or across time

Features

  • Do basic and advanced searches
  • Filter by:
    • Publication title (e.g. The Guardian or The Times)
    • Publication type (e.g. Newspapers, Newswires, Audio etc.)
    • Date range (e.g. Before, After, Between or a specific date)
    • Segment (e.g. to search for your keywords in the newspaper's headline and leading paragraph)
    • Geography (to limit a search to articles about a specific geographical location)
    • Industries/Companies (to find articles about specific industries or named companies)
  • Export full-text documents for analysis
  • Create and manage alerts
  • Manage folders to store searches, results, documents, alerts and notes
  • Save your search history

Coverage

  • It is international in scope, but there is an in-built bias towards the U.S in the filters. For example, it will display U.S. states by default (e.g. California, Iowa etc.) in the Location by Source filter. To view results from UK sources, it is necessary to select International >  Europe > United Kingdom
  • The company that produce Nexis Uni specialise in legal databases. That's why you will find law centric publications in Nexis Uni too.

  • BU has access to historical archives from The Guardian, The Independent and The Times. These are full-facsimile too and are designed for academic research. They have more advanced search options and the permanent archives go back further.
  • Use Nexis Uni, our main non-facsimile database, if you want to do advanced searches and textual analysis of articles.
  • Back-issues only go back one year in most cases on PressReader, so:
    • Use Nexis Uni to find articles going further back.
    • Screenshot and save any pages from PressReader you use for research or assignments. That way, you still have access even when the issue disappears from PressReader.
