EndNote Online: Step 2: Get Set Up

Get Set Up

Before you starting building a library of references, get your account set up. We advise you select the right Import option, select the Bibliographic style(s) that you will use the most and, if you choose to, download or launch the Cite While You Write (CWYW) plugin that links your EndNote account to Microsoft Word.

This video takes you through the steps of getting set up with favourites to speed up the process of reference management.

Select the right Import Option

In your EndNote Online account:

  • Collect > Import References.
  • Click Select Favourites, click in the All box.
  • Type r-e-f-m and click on RefMan RIS.
  • Click Copy to Favourites.

Select the right Bibliographic style

In your EndNote Online account:

  • Format > Bibliography.
  • Click Select Favourites, click in the All box.
  • Start typing the name of the style e.g. type h-a-r, scroll down to and click on Harvard(BourneU).
  • Click Copy to Favourites.

Download/launch the CWYW plugin for Microsoft Word

We recommend you come back to this step once you learn more about creating a reference list and have read through the tab 'Working with Microsoft Word'.

Option 1 - Download plugin: for Personal Windows/Mac computers

  • Make sure Microsoft Word is fully closed/quitted before proceeding.
  • In EndNote Online, go to ‘Downloads’.
  • See the ‘Installation Instructions’ and ‘System Requirements’, as necessary.
  • Click ‘Download Windows’ or 'Download Macintosh' (as appropriate) and follow the instructions.
  • Open Microsoft Word and check the EndNote tab is at the top of the screen.

Option 2 - Launch plugin (AppsAnywhere) for Personal Windows and Bournemouth University Windows computers:

  • For personal Windows computers, your version of Microsoft Word needs to be 64-bit. Click File, Account, About Word to find out.
  • Make sure Microsoft Word is fully closed/quitted before proceeding.
  • Go to AppsAnywhere and log in. Select the staff or student Domain as appropriate.
  • Find and launch ‘CWYW EndNote Plugin Office64’ (this plugin will only work with Word 64bit).
  • If you have future issues with CWYW, make sure the plugin is ‘Ready’ within your ‘Cloudpaging Player’, from where apps are launched and used.
  • Open Microsoft Word and check the EndNote tab is at the top of the screen.
