Academic skills for BU pre-arrivals

This guide is uses a selection of resources from our Academic Skills Hub to help future BU students begin their transition to BU.

Maths functional skills

Maths functional skills are the fundamental maths skills that people need in their professional and everyday life. Many career paths, including apprenticeships, require you to demonstrate these skills so you are able to solve mathematical problems that may be encountered in the workplace. These skills are useful in your everyday life too!

Maths Functional Skills are broken down into these key topic areas:

  • Using numbers and the number system
  • Measures, space and shape
  • Handling information and data

The video below includes examples of:

  • reverse percentages
  • volume of a cuboid
  • calculating the median
  • probability tree diagrams.

Overcoming maths anxiety

Have you ever sat down to take a maths test and immediately felt anxious, no matter how much you prepared? This is called maths anxiety, and it is quite common (around 1 in 5 people suffer from it).

You can also check out this website if you think you may have dyscalculia (a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics), and get some useful tips to help you: dyscalculia.me

The video below explores the current research around maths anxiety and suggests ways to increase maths performance.
