Reading lists: a guide for academics: Getting started

Editing Rights

Editing rights are automatically assigned to members of staff registered against the corresponding unit(s) on Brightspace.

You can view your lists in 'My Lists'.

If for some reason the unit is missing from your list, please contact your Faculty Library Team.

You will then be sent an 'invite' by email which you will need to accept before you can access or edit a reading list.

The invitation email will be generated by Talis Aspire. If you don't receive the email it will likely be found in your junk mail folder.

Installing the Bookmarks Tool

The bookmarks tool is an efficient way of adding items to your reading lists.

It's quick and easy to install on your browser. Note that you will need to make your bookmarks bar visible for it to work.

The Microsoft Edge browser does not support this tool. It is not possible to use it to bookmark items in LinkedIn Learning either. Please refer to the Extension Tool as an alternative that will work for these resources.

Here is a list of resources that support the bookmarking tool and extension.

Installing the Bookmarks Tool (step-by-step instructions)

  1. You will need to have the bookmarks bar (also known as 'Your Favourites') visible on your browser before the bookmarks tool can be added.
  2. In Chrome this is done by clicking on the 3 dots icon (options), and then going to 'Bookmarks' and making sure that 'Show bookmarks bar' is selected.

Whichever browser you use will have a similar set-up. The exception is Internet Explorer / Microsoft Edge which does not support the bookmarking tool. Please refer to the Extension Tool as an alternative that will work for Edge if that is your preferred browser.

  1. Go to 'My Bookmarks'.
  2. Click on the 'Install Bookmark Button'.

  1. Click 'Next'.

  1. Click on the 'Add to My Bookmarks' button and drag it into your bookmarks bar in your browser.
  2. Release the bookmarks bar button in your browser.
  3. Then click 'Next'.

  1. Click on 'Close'
  2. The Bookmarks Tool is now ready to use in the bookmarks bar of your browser.

Installing the Extension Tool

The Extension Tool is an alternative to the Bookmarks Tool. It does exactly the same thing but it will work on the Microsoft Edge browser and on a few other resources (such as LinkedIn Learning) which don't allow applications like the Bookmarking Tool to function.

Instructions and guidance on setting up the Extension Tool on your browser are available here from Talis Support.
