Research Data Management: Non-UKRI funders

Research Data Management (RDM) Library guide

National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)

Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • “Data management and access plans are currently in the process of being introduced across all NIHR funding programmes. These must be completed during the startup of the research and will be available on the NIHR Funding and Awards website. NIHR will monitor the submission and implementation of data management and access plans”. (NIHR position on the sharing of research data)
  • DMP Online is the recommended tool for completing your DMP. There isn't a specific NIHR template yet available.
Data sharing

Data repository requirements How long should data be deposited for?
  • The NIHR do not specify how long research data should be available for. BU's research data policy (4.9) specifies that a period of 10 years can be taken as a starting point.
Costs of data management and sharing
  • The NIHR do not explicitly address costs associated with data management and sharing.

Wellcome Trust

Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • “In cases where data, software or materials that will hold value as a resource for others in academia or industry will be generated, applicants will need to include an outputs management plan explaining their planned approach. We will review this plan when making our funding decision”. (Wellcome's Data, software and materials management and sharing policy)
  • DMP Online is loaded with the Wellcome Trust DMP template, and is the recommended tool for completing your DMP.
Data sharing

  • “We expect our researchers to maximise the availability of research data, software and materials with as few restrictions as possible. As a minimum, the data underpinning research papers should be made available to other researchers at the time of publication, as well as any original software that is required to view datasets or to replicate analyses" (Wellcome's Data, software and materials management and sharing policy).
  • Wellcome recommend Creative Commons licences such as CC0 or CC BY (How to complete an outputs management plan, Where your data and software will be made available).
Data repository requirements How long should data be deposited for?
  • Wellcome do not specify how long research data should be available for. BU's research data policy (4.9) specifies that a period of 10 years can be taken as a starting point.
Costs of data management and sharing
  • Wellcome will consider costs for dedicated data support staff; storage costs that exceed standard institutional allowances; costs of preparing data and the cost of long term preservation for very high-value outputs (on a case-by-case basis) (How to complete an outputs management plan, Resources required).

British Academy

Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • The British Academy do not have a research data policy and make no mention of DMPs. However, a DMP is a requirement of BU's research data policy (4.1).
  • DMP Online is the recommended tool for completing your DMP. There isn't a specific British Academy template. Either use the BU template, or the template of another organisation covering similar disciples.
Data sharing

  • “For projects whose primary purpose, or significant product, is the creation of a digital resource, data created as a result of the research, together with documentation, should be offered for deposit in an appropriately accessible repository within a reasonable time after the completion of the project" (The British Academy, Terms and Conditions of Award, 8.1).
  • The end of grant report must confirm that digital resources have been offered for deposit in a suitable repository (Monitoring and evaluation).
Data repository requirements How long should data be deposited for?
  • The British Academy do not specify how long research data should be available for. BU's research data policy (4.9) specifies that a period of 10 years can be taken as a starting point.
Costs of data management and sharing
  • The British Academy do not explicitly address costs associated with data management and sharing.

The Royal Society

Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • The Royal Society doesn't have it's own DMP template, but recommends that plans be structured in the most appropriate way for the research (Royal Society Research Grants Scheme, p.7).
  • DMP Online is the recommended tool for completing your DMP. Since there isn't a Royal Society template, either use the BU template or that of another organisation covering similar research areas.
  • "The information submitted in plans should focus specifically on how the data outputs will be managed and shared, detailing the repositories where data will be deposited." See the Royal Society Research Grants Scheme document (p.7) for more details.
Data sharing

  • “The Society supports science as an open enterprise and is committed to ensuring that data outputs from research supported by the Society are made publically available in a managed and responsible manner, with as few restrictions as possible" (Royal Society Research Grants Scheme, p.7; Conditions of Award, Section 11).
Data repository requirements How long should data be deposited for?
  • The Royal Society do not specify how long research data should be available for, but the Conditions of Award (Section 11) states that "The Host Organisation and Award Holder are expected to adopt the principles, standards and good practice for the management of research staff set out in the Concordat on Open Research Data (Principle 8) and subsequent amendments". This requires data be retained for 10 years, which aligns with BU's research data policy (4.9).
Costs of data management and sharing
  • The Royal Society do not explicitly address costs associated with data management and sharing. For all it's science journals, the Royal Society will cover the costs of depositing in Dryad (Open Data Policy).

Horizon Europe

Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • DMPs are "mandatory in Horizon Europe for projects generating and/or reusing data." (Horizon Europe Programme Guide, p.43). They are not required at project submission, which instead requires a shorter (maximum one page) outline of how data will be managed (Horizon Europe Programme Guide, p.40). See page 5 of the Open Science in Horizon Europe Guide for details.
  • DMPs must be regularly updated (Horizon Europe Programme Guide, p.44).
  • DMP Online is the recommended tool for completing DMPs. It is currently loaded with the predecessor Horizon 2020 template, which differs slightly from the Horizon Europe template [last checked 31/05/2022]. The Horizon Europe template is available from the Reference Documents page on the Funder and Tender Opportunities website (Templates & forms > Project reporting templates > Data management plan (HE)).
Data sharing

  • Research data must be deposited open access in a trusted repository following the principle "as open as possible, as closed as necessary" (Annotated Model Grant Agreement, p.157).
  • "Deposition of data must take place as soon as possible after data production/generation or after adequate processing and quality control have taken place, providing value and context to the data and at the latest by the end of the project." (Annotated Model Grant Agreement, p.158).
Data repository requirements How long should data be deposited for?
  • The Horizon Europe documentation does not specify how long research data should be available for. BU's research data policy (4.9) specifies that a period of 10 years can be taken as a starting point.
Costs of data management and sharing
  • "Costs for research output management (e.g. management of research data) are eligible if the eligibility conditions are fulfilled, including open access to peer-reviewed publications ... research data and other outputs." (Annotated Model Grant Agreement, p.71).
