Introduction to the Library: Printing, photocopying and scanning

Cost of printing and photocopying

Printing and photocopying charges are:

Black and white: 3p per side

Colour: 18p per side

There is no charge for scanning.

Print account - checking your balance and adding credit

On the Student webpages go to Log-in services> Quick links to other BU services>Add Print Credit.

This takes you to the Equitrac login page where you need to login with your BU username and password.

You can view your print credit balance here -  and if you need to, you can then make a card payment to top it up.

Minimum top-up online is £2.

How to print

At the computer

  • In your document, select Print
  • Choose a print queue: Secure Mono (black and white) or Secure Colour
  • Double-sided printing is the default. If you want to print on one side only, select single-sided under print settings to avoid being charged for double-sided.

Then at the printer
  • Go to a printer networked to your chosen print queue (Secure Mono or Secure Colour)
  • Tap your ID card (once only) on the card reader
  • Select  "Release documents" option from the menu
  • Select which items you want to print (or press "Select all"), then press Print in the bottom left hand corner of the screen
  • To carry out another action, click on the silver home button to be taken back to the option screen
  • Or to log off, tap your card again on the card reader.

Photocopying and scanning to email

On the multi-functional printers in the Libraries and Open Access Centres you can do copying and scanning as well as printing.

Make sure you have enough print credit on your account then log in at a printer.

Scanning to email is free of charge - but you do need at least 3p on your account for your login to be recognised.

Photocopying is charged at the same rate as printing.

Can't log on to a printer?

  • The first time you try to use your print account you will need to register your card at the printer.  Tap your ID card on the card reader then follow the instructions on the display screen to confirm you want to register.
  • When the on-screen keyboard appears, type in your username and password
  • Registering your card is a one-off process, so if you get an error message on a later occasion it normally means that you have insufficient credit on your account

Printing from a laptop or mobile device

Laptops borrowed from the lockers on campus are already set up for wireless printing. See details of where you can access a laptop loan for use on campus.

To set up your own laptop, tablet or mobile phone for wireless printing, please refer to the help sheet for the operating system your device is running. The help sheets are available online on the IT Services'  "Service Now" Knowledge Base and also via our library webpages. We also have printed copies at the Help Zone..

Or you can email your printing to printing@bournemouth.ac.uk. Your BU email address is automatically linked to your print account and your print credit balance. Once you have emailed your documents, they will go into your print queue and you can print them out from any printer on campus.  If you send something to print from a personal email account, you will need to register that account while on the BU network (on campus and connected to the Wifi). When you first email printing@bournemouth.ac.uk from a personal account you will get an automatic reply with some simple instructions.
